Cyriel Marijnissen‘s work has a graphic style with strong contrasts in color as well as the way of working. The work is expressive and comic, with fragments of text that provide the images with extra depth, like music samples.
He gets inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat and George Condo but also has a passion for the modern African painting culture. The raw impulsiveness on the one hand and the contrasting color areas on the other.
His works are characterized by thickly applied layers of paint combined with oil pastel and ‘school notebook’ materials such as pen, ink and markers. A hint at the teacher’s family he grew up in.
